Infection of the middle ear (Otitis media) Inflammation of the middle ear is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection originating in the nose or throat. The infection spreads along the eustachian tube to the inner ear. Symptoms include sudden severe earache, fullness in the ear, temporary deafness, tinnitus, and fever. In severe cases ear infections can cause a loss of balance or vertigo. Children under 7 years are particularly susceptible to ear infections and may have recurrent attacks. Regular use of Xlear Nasal Wash may reduce incidence of inner ear infection by helping to wash out infection causing bacteria and viruses before they reach the eustachian tube. Tip: Regular use of Xylitol chewing gum (now widely available) has also been found to significantly reduce the incidence of inner ear infection amongst children. Note: chewing gum may not be suitable for young children. NOTE: This information is not intended to replace the advice of your doctor or any other specialist. |
